Who is eligible?
Fellowships are open to doctoral candidates, post-doctorate scholars, and independent scholars who can demonstrate similar professional or academic experience.

What does “resident fellowship” mean?
Recipients are expected to work full time on their research projects at the Library.

May non-US citizens apply?
Yes, provided the applicant can secure the necessary travel documents. Please be aware that the US does not have tax treaties with some countries and you may be required to pay income taxes on your fellowship monies.

Are fellowships available for less than one month or more than nine months?
No, at this time the minimum duration is one month and the maximum is nine months.

Must I have a fellowship in order to do research in the Library’s collections?
No, the Library is open to all who wish to use its collections.

Where do I find more information about the Library's collections?
More information on the collections can be found on the Library's History of Science and Collections web pages. You may also want to look at the Library's holdings in the online catalog or digital collections. What is the application deadline?
Completed application packets for 2013 fellowships are due no later than January 3, 2013.

If my application is accepted, when will I be notified?
Fellowship recipients will be notified in early spring 2013.

What criteria are used in evaluating the fellowship applications?
The application will be evaluated based on the following metrics:

  • Importance of the Library's collections to the research project
  • Intellectual, historic and/or scientific significance of the project
  • Estimated length of time the applicant anticipates spending at the Library

How are fellows chosen?
The applications are reviewed by a selection committee comprised of Library staff and unbiased scholars not affiliated with the Library.

If I am awarded a fellowship, are there restrictions regarding when I must take up my fellowship?
Fellowships must be used within a year from the award date.

What requirements must fellows meet?
Fellows must:

  • Work full time at the Library on his or her research project.
  • Offer a lecture/seminar to general public while in residence.
  • Engage in seminars and/or social interactions with other fellows in residence.
  • Acknowledge the Library in any resulting publication or presentation based on the fellowship and provide a copy of any resulting publication to the Library.
  • Provide documentation (tax forms, visas, work permits) as required by law.
  • Provide a statement of how expenditure of grant monies was consistent with the project.
  • Write an evaluation of the research experience at the Library and the extent to which the Library collections met research expectations.

If my application is accepted, how will my fellowship funds be dispensed?
The Fellowship covers travel and living expenses up to $3,500 per month. Expenses are reimbursed upon presentation of receipts and will be dispensed twice a month.

May I apply for a fellowship if I have held one previously?
Yes, you may reapply one year after having been awarded a fellowship.

If my application was not accepted, may I reapply for a fellowship?
There is no limit on the number of times you may apply. A complete application must be submitted each time you apply.
