Voyages: Scientific Circumnavigations 1679 to 1859
The Voyage of Laplace 1830-1832

Laplace describes the crew’s experiences as they sailed along the Strait of Malacca: "…already the inconveniences of navigating the strait were proven to us; the heat was suffocating, and the breeze relentlessly varied, forcing constant maneuvering of the ship. At nightfall, one part of the horizon was covered in black clouds… the thunder rolled through the mountains of Sumatra… and we received a torrent of rain."
