Voyages: Scientific Circumnavigations 1679 to 1859
William Dampier: 1679-1707

Dampier's observations and descriptions of his voyage in the Roe-Buck spilled into a second volume. This work narrates his explorations in New Guinea.

New Guinea Fauna

from A Continuation of A Voyage to New Holland,
e-c. in the year 1699 ...

London: By W. Botham for J. Knapton, 1709.

For some curious reason, the bat shown on this plate reminded Dampier of a fox:

"Here are likewise abundance of Bats, as big as young Coneys; their Necks, Head, Ears and Noses, like Foxes; their Hair rough; that about their Necks, is of a whitish yellow, that on their Heads and Shoulders black; their Wings are four Foot over, from tip to tip: They smell like Foxes."
